Maintenance is the primary mission of the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club. NBATC maintains 90 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Central Virginia from Blackhorse Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Tye River in Nelson County. The 90 miles are divided into smaller sections which are maintained by volunteers. In addition, maintenance crews go out every Wednesday and Saturday. Maintenance activites include cutting weeds, trimming bushes, clearing trees that fall across the trail, grading the footpath, maintaining bridges, stream crossings, shelters and privies, installing water bars to control erosion and relocating the trail where needed. There is always a need for more maintainers! So if you are interested, please contact the volunteers listed below. Maintaining a 2000 mile footpath entirely with volunteers is a worthy endeavor, not to mention it is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and stay physically fit!
